O Dia dos Namorados é uma data comemorativa, não oficial, destinada aos casais de namorados, pretendentes e apaixonados. É tradição a troca de presentes, bombons e cartões com mensagens de amor entre namorados ou pessoas que se amam. Aqui no Brasil, esta data é comemorada em 12 de junho. Em outros países, como nos Estados Unidos, por exemplo, a comemoração ocorre em 14 de fevereiro (Dia de São Valentim – Valentine’s Day).

História da data (14 de fevereiro) - Origem do Dia de São Valentim

A comemoração desta data remonta o Império Romano. Um bispo da Igreja Católica, São Valentim, foi proibido de realizar casamentos pelo imperador romano Claudius II. Porém, o bispo desrespeitou a ordem imperial e continuou com as celebrações de matrimônio, porém de forma secreta. Foi preso pelos soldados e condenado à morte. Enquanto estava na prisão, recebeu vários bilhetes e cartões, de jovens apaixonados, valorizando o amor, a paixão e o casamento. O bispo Valentim foi decapitado em 14 de fevereiro do ano 270.

Em sua homenagem, esta data passou a ser destinada aos casais de namorados e ao amor. A comemoração passou a ser realizada todo 14 de junho, principalmente, na Europa e, posteriormente (século XVII), nos Estados Unidos.

História do Dia dos Namorados no Brasil (12 de junho)

No Brasil, a data apresenta uma história bem diferente, pois está relacionada ao frei português Fernando de Bulhões (Santo Antônio). Em suas pregações religiosas, o frei sempre destacava a importância do amor e do casamento. Em função de suas mensagens, depois de ser canonizado, ganhou a fama de “santo casamenteiro”.

Portanto, em nosso país foi escolhida a data de 12 de junho por ser véspera do dia de Santo Antônio (13 de junho). Assim como em diversos países do mundo, aqui também é tradição a troca de presentes e cartões entre os casais de namorados.

Cada rapaz escolhia o seu papel e a menina escolhida deveria ser sua namorada naquele ano todo.

O dia da festa se transformou no dia dos namorados, nos EUA e na Europa, o Valentine’s Day, 14 de fevereiro, em homenagem ao Padre Valentine. Em 270 a.C., o bispo romano Valentino desafiou o imperador Claudius II que proibia que se realizasse o matrimônio e continuou a promover casamentos. Para Claudius, um novo marido significava um soldado a menos. Preso, enquanto esperava sua execução, o bispo Valentine se apaixonou pela filha cega de seu carcereiro, Asterius. No Brasil, a gênese da data é menos romântica. Alguns a atribuem a uma promoção pioneira da loja Clipper, realizada em São Paulo em 1948. Outros dizem que o Dia dos Namorados foi introduzido no Brasil, em 1950, pelo publicitário João Dória, que criou um slogan de apelo comercial que dizia "não é só com beijos que se prova o amor". A intenção de Dória era criar o equivalente brasileiro ao Valentine's Day - o Dia dos Namorados realizado nos Estados Unidos. É provável que o dia 12 de junho tenha sido a data escolhida porque representa uma época em que o comércio de presentes não fica tão intenso. A idéia funcionou tão bem para os comerciantes, que desde aquela época, o Brasil inteiro comemora anualmente a data. Outra versão reverencia a véspera do dia de Santo Antônio, o santo casamenteiro.
